About Us

The Tag Mill is a queer-owned, female-led independent creative studio based in Birmingham, UK, run by Rosie and Zoe. We make original cards for the games we love: custom tokens for Magic: The Gathering and alt art cards for Netrunner.

Rosie and Zoe love attending in-person events, such as CommandFest and meeting other players and artists.

We launched in 2024 out of a shared love for card game art, especially in the Netrunner community. What started as a creative side project for ourselves grew into a studio making original artwork for tabletop players who want something more considered in their decks. Two years in, we have a full range of MTG token styles, seven Netrunner collections, and very strong opinions about cardstock.

What We Make

We make custom board game art in the form of alt arts, tokens, prints, and stickers. We specialise in all things card and paper, but also have recently launched some apparel too.

MTG Tokens across four distinctive styles. The Medieval series takes from real illuminated manuscripts and historical woodcuts, reimagined for Commander. The Fantasy series is bold, painterly, and full colour. The Typographic series is high-contrast graphic design, where the letterform does the visual work. The Alphabet series reduces each creature to one clean, playful letter built for board states where you need thirty of them at once.

Over 40 creature types available, from Treasure tokens (every Smothering Tithe trigger deserves a good-looking Treasure) to Dragons, Goblins, Zombies, and Squirrels. Available as singles and in booster packs. Printed on S33 premium black-core cardstock at standard MTG size (63 x 88 mm), sleeve-compatible and tournament legal.

Netrunner Alt Art Cards across seven collections, from Grey Area (the staples set) to Snack Attack, our newest release. We make playsets (3 copies, because that is how many you run), identity singles, duo bundles, and complete sets. Same S33 cardstock, same tournament legal dimensions, with a Tag Mill card back on the reverse. If you play Netrunner, you know why alt art matters. If you do not play Netrunner yet, we can fix that.

Stickers and art prints featuring original game art for the wider TCG community.

Apparel featuring cute MTG references, or t-shirts to show off your Netrunner pride. We make hoodies, patches, t-shirts, and jumpers.

Our Values

Original. Every design in this shop is ours. We do not use AI generation at any stage: no AI sketching, no AI colouring, no AI finishing. We use digital tablets and Adobe illustration software, the same way any professional digital artist works. We celebrate human-made art, and we love working on bespoke projects inspired by conversations with players. Commissions are currently open.

Fun. We make things that feel distinctive and playful. Above all, we create for players because we are players ourselves. You will find us at CommandFest, UK Games Expo, Local Game Stores, and other TCG events around the UK throughout the year.

Community-first. We make for the communities we are part of. We play these games. We know the cards, the formats, the in-jokes, the deck archetypes that need fifteen Goblin tokens for reasons.

Well-made. We are cardstock nerds. We care about the weight, the finish, the opacity. S33 premium black-core cardstock is the choice because it is the right choice: tournament legal, sleeve-compatible, and black-cored so the card back does not bleed through when held up to the light. Every order is carefully packaged, and we include a hand-written note because we like doing that.

"I love the care and attention put into every one. The double-sided nature means more artistic freedom on one side, but a tournament-legal alt-art on the other so you never have to worry about getting your deck checked before a tournament."

No AI

This comes up often enough that it deserves its own section.

Every card in this shop is 100% human-made. From the first design decision to the final print file, the art is made by Rosie or Zoe, through sketchbooks, digital tablets, and archival research. We make human decisions about line weight, composition and colour. No generation, no hybrid workflow that starts with a generated image and finishes with a human touching it up.

We started The Tag Mill because we wanted to make things for the communities we are part of. Handing that work to a machine would defeat the point entirely. We also think it matters for the TCG community. Both Magic and Netrunner have a long tradition of amazing artists and we want to be part of that tradition, not something that dilutes it.

"Amazing, thank you so much for keeping alt art alive, made by humans and available outside of tournaments on your store!"

Find Us In Person

We bring the full range to events across the UK throughout the year: CommandFest, UK Games Expo, District and Megacity Championships, and various local events. It is a good way to see the cards in person before you buy, talk about what you are building, or just say hello.

Who We Are

Rosie and Zoe at The Tag Mill

Zoe designs with a sense of humour. She loves shadows, satire, and bold colour theory, and brings a genuine interest in popular culture and critical theory to her illustration work. If a Tag Mill piece has a second layer to it, something that rewards a closer look, that is Zoe.

Rosie loves stickers, typography, and small designs with real impact. She is interested in all things digital, happiest with a cat on her lap, and quietly responsible for more spreadsheets than she lets on. The Typographic and Alphabet token series, the Medieval archival research, and the behind-the-scenes shop infrastructure are all hers.

Between us we cover a lot of creative ground and we both play the games we make things for. When we are designing a token or an alt art, we are thinking about the table, not just the image.
